My boyfriend and I booked a week stay at Todo Bien through the Rapture camp website. When we booked at Todo Bien (whose completely separate brand was never mentioned on the Rapture site), I was under the impression that we were staying at a more private version of the temporarily closed Rapture surf camp - and the description made it sound like it would be the same experience: friendly young people, surfing, theory classes, host activities, and making friends with the guests and staff. It was labeled as a “resort” on the website rather than “surf camp.” While we’ve had a nice time, I probably wouldn’t return to this location. Detractors: 1. This stay is more Airbnb than anything else - it’s certainly not a resort. It’s also not a Rapture camp, and it really shouldn’t be on its website. The guests here do receive help to plan surf lessons or day trips or yoga etc. but there’s no entertainment put on by the residence like it seems that signature locations by Rapture do with lots of movie nights and theory classes and games after dinner. I was expecting more opportunities to practice surfing aside from surfing the 1 break close by for an hour with nothing between sessions — plus there’s an added cost for surf guiding to any other break. On the other hand, it’s definitely not a resort. So, I thought I was buying into a Rapture experience, and quickly learned that I wouldn’t be getting it. In my opinion, Todo Bien should not be on the Rapture website. 2. None of the websites tell you that the Jungle apartment is located directly beneath their primary home. This means that you hear the (very sweet and cute) kiddos running around on your ceiling all day and in the early morning. 3. There are 3 dogs on site - and they will bark a lot. They’ll probably wake you up along with the howler monkeys, or even keep you up at night. 4. During our stay, we had two days with no power. We were told that this “never happens” by the owner, and that it happens all the time by locals, but we lost power for two whole days. It started in the middle of the night and we tried sleeping outside all over the property before deciding we would rather bare the heat than the mosquitoes. Considering how fickle the electricity is here, I cannot understand how the property doesn’t have a backup generator or, at the very least, a battery operated fan in each room. No power also means no coffee and no charging phones and no wifi :( so if you need to WFH beware. 5. The property boasts being a 10 minute walk from the beach - which is true, going there. The way back is a very brutal hill climb in the heat and takes closer to 15-20 minutes. Positives: 1. Fabienne, the volunteer staff member onsite, was like the backbone of the establishment during our visit. She helped us communicate with staff, get us our essentials, gave us recommendations, taught yoga, organized our massages, organized our surf lessons, kept us company as we were the only guests, and helped to prepare our meals. She was like 100/10 best part of the trip and kept the entire operation together from what we could see. She did the work of a general manager and was much more responsive than the owner. The other caretaking and housekeeping staff, like Nancy and Byron and Tito and Larena and Marlena were the best ever. 2. One of the best parts of the trip was the easily accessible massages ($35 for an hour) and yoga classes ($10). Both activities really made our days. Fabienne set those up for us so easily. Overall, I don’t think this place completely matches the pictures. Coming from the US, it is a really good deal, but not good enough for two day power outages and kids running on your ceiling and grimy bathrooms. This is not luxury in the jungle. There are other properties in the area that will arrange surf lessons for you and have air conditioning for a lower price. More than anything, it’s not going to give you a group campy vibe unless you happen to be staying there at the same time as some really cool people.

Nothing but good vibes at the Todo Bien Nicaragua. This place is every bit as spectacular as the pictures- oh that sunset!. Kiwi Matt McConaughey, the proprietor, and his beautiful family were very gracious hosts along with Ellen, the resident surf, scuba and sailing instructor, shaman, school teacher and social director. The property was designed in such a way that you can have the opportunity to relax in privacy or meet interesting travelers in the communal areas. We enjoyed the option to cook in our kitchen (picked up our provisions on the way over at a very nice grocery store in Rivas) or partake in the breakfast and dinners offered by the house. Never, got the chance to do the nightly sunset yoga (overlooking Ocean!), but the guests who did came away all dreamy-eyed. Recommend you also visit the coffee shop near the beach (also owned by Todo Bien), Juanita's and Machete.

I was at ease even before my arrival at this unparalleled tranquil eco lodging accommodation. The hosts Tim & Cynthia were quick to provide me safe & reliable transportation who escorted me from the Liberia, Costa Rican airport & seamless crossing over the Nicaraguan border. The property at Todo Bien was stunning & was literally in the jungle, but just a brief, few minute walk to Playa Maderas. I stayed in one of the gorgeous private cabanas, and was elated to have my bedding replaced & made when needed, and housekeeping asking if I needed anything at all. Meals were provided in the morning and if you missed it for an early surf, it was an option to have breakfast at the Maderas Cafe by the beach that the beautiful, sweet couple own as well ! I ate so clean & healthy & it made for even more energy for the day. Dinner was cooked fresh every night served by the pool overlooking the view of the ocean, with variety; some were even traditional Peruvian dishes inspired from Cynthia. There is a brilliant yoga deck ( perfect for sunset watch ) & below an optional space for a private massage. I had a kind gentleman pick me up by horse in the driveway for sunset rides on the beach more than once. Gated & private property, no concern for safety in this best kept secret neighborhood. Good vibes & worldly, charming couple that can provide & arrange & recommend anything you may need. I most certainly did not want to leave and hadn’t slept that well in years! I look forward to my next adventure there & it made for a great opportunity to meet more intrepid people along the way. Gracias por todo, Todo Bien :)
