Very cozy and has a big home-y feeling thanks to Liz's awesome personality. Rooms are great and very clean with mosquito nets, breakfast is absolutely perfect and different every day. If I come back to Ometepe 100% coming back to this hostel! (there were a lot of bugs though around the sink, but I don't think you'll find a hostel that doesn't have bugs so just beware and come here!!). Thank you to the beautiful people of the hostel for having us!

Our family of 4 had a wonderful stay at Las Penitas. Lizzette was such a great host, she sat down with us the night we arrived and helped us plan out what we wanted to do. She booked our scooters each day we wanted them, the night before, she told us whether or not dinner would be available on certain days so we could plan ahead. She organized our guide for hiking, Concepcion. She told us that the bus would be waiting when the ferry arrived, which it was and allowed us to get right to her place in about 45 minutes saving us about $30 in Taxi. She also knew all the times to get the bus back to the ferry or to the hike. Staying along the main road was really helpful for transport on the bus. The breakfast and dinners were delicious and the rooms were large and the beds comfortable and each one had a fan. There also were not any mosquitoes which I had read other places had, maybe closer to the lake? At breakfast and dinner we sat down with other guests and had a family style meal, the hammocks were comfortable to hang out in and the dogs and chickens were great, and a monkey came to the house one afternoon. Renting a scooter is definitely a must for days of exploring, and is really easy to organize and get gas at the end of the night in Alta Gracia, just down the road. I am really glad we stayed at Las Penitas, as there are many choices on the island, but I found this one very convenient and Liz and her family are such lovely people, I am glad we stayed there! She also speaks perfect English and Spanish, and it seemed Dutch as well.

Super lovely hostel with an even lovelier host! It’s simple but has everything you need, including super tasty and authentic food you can purchase for a good price made by the family itself. The owners speak english and are extremely friendly and helpful so that you’ll get great advice about the island - they’ll tell you for example about an almost “private“ & beautiful beach just near the hostel where you‘ll be on your own with just a few locals, something you wouldn’t have found out yourself. The hostel has a really comfy atmosphere and you can just feel the passion and hard work the family has put into their place!

This family is the salt of the earth! Truly. It's not fancy but it's everything you need and everything you didn't know you needed. I got in a motorbike crash my 2nd day on the island and aquired road rash over 25% of my body. I don't use doctors, but I definitely needed a nurse!! For days now, they have been helping my husband and I with taking care of my wounds and literally treated us like family. The kids are sweet and played with mine (language barrier didn't matter). The dogs are a joy. The cat hasn't talked to me yet but seems cool. I'm just so grateful that we booked our reservations late which resulted in us finding this place! It's just a few mins from the ojo de agua and 20 mins from Balgue. The views are beautiful, nica food is great (and they cater to my vegetarian needs), beautiful garden, chickens, roosters, and a big ole pig. If you wanna stay with family that is excited you're visiting.... Stay here!

Stayed here for three nights while on Ometepe. Mark and his lovely family were so welcoming and kind. The food was amazing! $3 breakfast and $6 dinner, very tasty. Mark sorted out a guide for us to hike one of the volcanos and gave us all the information we needed for any activities. The hostel is still growing and they are still building rooms and beds but the hospitality they showed compensated for the unfinished areas. Clean rooms, clean showers, great location. 100% would recommend.
