A little gem that this new hostal! We slept 8 nights from January 17 to 25, 2016 in this little gem which is a brand new hostal just over 5 months old. The staff is very friendly and you feel at home from the first seconds. We salute our dear Mariela who is the daughter of the owner with whom we have become very close friends and more. We stayed in large room 10 with 4 single beds and a private bathroom. The only downside to the hostal for us is that the walls are not soundproofed so that if people are the slightest bit noisy in the room next to yours, you are cooked to the bone. This is what happened to us on the first night when a bus of Mexican tourists stopped in room 9. They went to bed late and got up very early to leave. It's as if there was no wall in fact. The other 7 nights were a charm even with a small romantic couple in room 9 who were discreet and respectful. The wifi worked 100% with a strong signal everywhere, even in the room. We loved the large terrace on the second floor facing the street with comfy chairs and a table and view of the smoking volcano to boot. We have sat here often and enjoyed all the goodness. We were able to put our water in the fridge at the reception downstairs, which was much appreciated. The hostal sells soft drinks and beer at a very reasonable price of 15 cordobas for refrescos and 25 cordobas for cans of beer which cost 23 at the Pila supermarket. Security is provided 24 hours a day with a camera system and the gate always locked at the entrance. The guard opens the door for us instantly whether to enter or leave. Leave your key at the reception if you want your room cleaned and it is not done systematically. We paid the excellent price of 20 US dollars per day which still gives 29 Canadian dollars for Canadians with the weakness of our dollar. We also slept there on February 15 and 16, 2016, but in room 8 this time, which was rather disappointing, especially because of the very unpleasant sewage smells coming from the bathroom. We gave up because we love this hostal and we were only there for two days. We recommend that you avoid this room. We were satisfied on all other points just like our first stay and the rate was still 20 US dollars. We hope that our photos will convince you. We highly recommend staying at Hostal San Juan.
