Stayed 2 weeks in homestay and had an amazing experience. I didn't want to leave! My teacher Ninfa was the best, loved her and learned a lot. Also very much enjoyed volunteering in the garden for a week, and then another week doing marketing for the school. It's a lil paradise!! Highly recommend both to learn Spanish and have authentic connections with locals. The rescued animals (16 dogs and 12 cats) also are adorable. Very well behaved and sweethearts ❤️ Also amazing food, and I'm not even vegetarian!

My experience at the Mariposa was the highlight of my trip to Nicaragua- a country I have grown extremely fond of and look forward to returning to again. The history here, the people, the life on the street and in the microbús… I was already sold on Nicaragua but the Mariposa really made it all come together. Paulette and Tamar and Donald and Ishmael and Jenny and Guillermina and the whole staff made me feel so welcome from the first moment I arrived. The lessons were four hours a day one on one and my Spanish now has the backbone it so desperately needed. I saw into a volcano and swam in a beautiful lake. I interacted with people I would have never met otherwise and got a glimpse into the everyday life of a small and friendly community I otherwise would never have found. If you are interested in the what Nicaragua is really like you can get a true sample of it in La Concha. But come interested in the history here. Come interested in what a better Nicaragua would need and look like, and thus a better world. Thanks La Mariposa. ¡Hasta luego!

I was in La Mariposa for 4 weeks, attended the Spanish school and did a voluteering as a physiotherapist in the project Chispa de Vida. La Mariposa is a very special place with wonderful people and animals. It was such a great experience that I would not want to miss. The Spanish classes were very good, 2 hours a day of grammar and 2 hours of conversation. There were 3 super delicious and healthy home grown meals every day. Then I worked 3 hours a day (mo-fr) as a physical therapist with disabled kids. I learned so much and caterine is a great therapist!!! I especially enjoyed the equinotherapy that happens every Monday with the kids. On the weekends there are great trips to surrounding places. For example volcano masaya, granada, leon, playa bosquito and much more. I made new friends and will definitely come back in the future. Thank you all for the great time and I will miss you all very much!!!! Melina

La Mariposa is a wonderful place to learn Spanish. The owner, Paulette, is passionate about social justice and treats both her staff and her guests very well. She has a lot of rescue animals she took in over the years and has established a number of programs that benefit the local community. The teachers are lovely, and I very much enjoyed learning about the political history of Nicaragua as well as seeing a lot of interesting sites during our weekly outings. Paulette is a generous woman with a very big heart, and I strongly recommend staying at Mariposa even if you are just passing through. And, as a bonus, the food is vegetarian and very good!

La Mariposa Spanish Language School is so much more than just a language school. Yes, the quality of teaching Spanish is excellent, but also it is the environment, the friendliness, and the other activities you are involved in which makes it such a great experience. There are many diverse volunteering opportunities. You can really begin to feel part of the community if the local area, in a very short time being there. I have stayed twice, for two weeks each stay, and regard San Juan and La Mariposa as a second home. Highly recommended.
